What is an Emergency Contact?
An Emergency Contact is a trusted individual you choose, whose role is to be notified if something urgent or unexpected happens to you.
Who can be an Emergency Contact
- A spouse, parent, sibling, adult child
- A close friend, neighbour, or colleague
- Someone over 18, available by phone most of the time
- Ideally located in the same province (New Brunswick) or Canada
- Someone who can clearly communicate in English or French with hospitals, police, or emergency services
Responsibilities
- Receive emergency calls from police, hospital, school, or employer
- Provide basic information: allergies, medications, health conditions, blood type, insurance details
- Authorize urgent care if you are unconscious
- Arrange logistics: pick up children, notify family, organize transport, bring documents
- Provide emotional support during stressful situations
What data is collected?
- Full name
- Phone number(s)
- Relationship to you
- Address (optional)
All data is used only in emergencies and stored according to Canadian privacy rules (PIPEDA, PHIPAA in NB).
Important to remember
- An Emergency Contact is NOT legally responsible for your actions or debts
- Their role is to support, not replace a legal guardian or power of attorney
- You can have two Emergency Contacts: primary (can make decisions) and secondary (receives information)
How to add on your phone
- Android: Contacts app → Medical Info & Emergency Contacts section
- iPhone: Settings → Health app → Medical ID
